Healthy eating is essential for a healthy pregnancy!
A child’s health is closely related to how his mother is fed from the first day of her pregnancy to her second birthday. For this reason, the nutrition of the expectant mother during pregnancy gains a special importance both for her own health and for the healthy development and growth of her future baby.
Pointing out that adequate and balanced nutrition is a critical role especially when it comes to child and maternal health, Muratbey Nutrition Consultant Prof. Dr. Muazzez Garipağaoğlu recommends that expectant mothers consume foods rich in calcium, protein, vitamin D and folic acid.
Mom and baby need calcium!
Stating that pregnant women should include diversity in foods (consuming different types of foods) in order to be fed adequately, Prof. Dr. Drawing attention to the fact that protein and calcium are indispensable, Garipağaoğlu said, “Calcium is one of the most important minerals during pregnancy and breastfeeding. When sufficient calcium is not taken during these periods, changeable calcium at the bone ends is mobilized and the baby’s needs are met.
This condition, which causes softening of the mother’s bones, is called Osteomalasia (bone softening). Prolonged calcium deficiency leads to Osteoporosis (bone destruction) later in life. Therefore, calcium consumption is very important, especially during pregnancy. These risks can be reduced if women consume appropriate amounts of milk, yogurt, and especially cheese during critical periods such as pregnancy and breastfeeding.
When choosing cheese, pay attention to its content!
Stating that cheese is a dairy product that meets the quality protein, calcium and many useful nutrients needed during pregnancy in the best and easiest way, Prof. Dr. Garipağaoğlu said, “Vitamin D, which the body cannot produce by itself, is also important for pregnant women. Vitamin D, which is not found naturally in foods, has a critical role for calcium to settle into bones. The main source of vitamin D is sunlight. It is very rare in foods. If the sun’s rays are not used sufficiently, vitamin D must be taken into the body with external support or enriched foods. Regular consumption of cheeses enriched with vitamin D provides superiority in meeting vitamin D as well as protein and calcium ”.
Consume low-fat and salty cheeses
Suggesting the choice of low-fat, low-salt cheeses as a variety for health, Prof. Dr. Garipağaoğlu states, “Low-fat cheeses are helpful in maintaining weight control during pregnancy and breastfeeding, and low-salt ones help reduce the risk of blood pressure. In addition to cheese and dairy products, bread and cereals during pregnancy, fresh vegetables and fruits in the season, meat, chicken, fish, eggs, legumes, nuts and dried fruits should be consumed in recommended amounts ”.
