It is very important to take regular and sufficient amount of iron, especially during the periods of diet. What Should Be Considered When Using Iron Drugs?
Prof. Dr. Coşkun Tecimer gives the following information on this subject; It is necessary to take iron pills before meals or with meat. Taking vitamin C increases the absorption of medications. Therefore, it is recommended to use a vitamin C tablet or consume orange juice while using iron medications. The higher the iron absorption rate, the faster the anemia problem will be resolved. The consumption of foods such as tea and milk greatly reduces the absorption of iron. Iron medications should be drunk at least 2 hours after consuming these foods.
Dietician İrem Çelik gives the following information on this subject;
Iron drugs are usually prescribed to relieve anemia. Most people with this problem feel better from the first days of taking their medication. However, the drugs should be used regularly for several months in order to fill the iron stores completely.
If you think you have anemia problem, you can ask a physician to have the necessary tests done.. However, if a person tries to self-medicate or uses iron medications that are not prescribed, the amount of iron in the blood may increase at a risky level. As a result, cases of iron poisoning occur. Anemia occurs as a result of not consuming foods rich in iron. However, the presence of diseases such as colon cancer or ulcers can also cause this problem. In these cases, different treatments will need to be applied instead of using iron medication.
It is recommended to use the prescribed iron drugs in the presence of vitamin C. Vitamin C supports the absorption of iron by the body. For this reason, it is very important to consume vitamin C tablets, rosehips, green vegetables, parsley, potatoes and citrus fruits during the periods of iron medicine. Caffeine, milk, tea, green tea, high fiber foods and stomach medicines (antacids) prevent iron absorption.
In order to avoid anemia problem, foods rich in iron should be consumed regularly. Examples of these foods are eggs, red meat, iron-enriched foods and whole grain foods.
It is recommended to take medications 1 hour before meals to strengthen the absorption of iron in the body. However, it will be appropriate to use it 2 hours after eating. Yoghurt, cheese and milk should not be consumed while using iron medications. Because these foods are very rich in calcium. At the same time, it is necessary to avoid consumption of spinach, coffee, tea, antacids and calcium supplements.
