What are the causes of lipase elevation?

Lipase is an enzyme found in various parts of the body including the pancreas, intestine and liver. The lipase produced by the pancreas helps digest foods by digesting fat components called triglycerides into small moles. Experts report that the pancreas is the primary source of lipase in the body. The lipase level in the blood can increase from pancreatic related diseases to diabetes.

Problems with the pancreas

Lipase elevation usually manifests itself with severe pain in the middle part of the abdomen. Since the pancreatic organ is in this region, inflammation of the pancreas also increases lipase levels. This condition is called acute pancreatitis and occurs mostly in those who use alcohol and gallstones. Repeated seizures of acute pancreatitis may elevate the lipase levels chronically and cause chronic pancreatitis. Pancreatic tumors can also trigger a rise in lipase levels. Finally, injury to the pancreas, trauma or pancreatic surgery may also increase lipase.

cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is an infection in the gallbladder and may cause an increase in the lipase level. Lipase levels may also increase in people with obstruction in the intestines. The intestinal ulcer in the upper part of the small intestine, known as duodenum, is also one of the reasons for the increase in lipase level.

Gallbladder and Bowel Problems

Gluten is a type of protein found in wheat products such as flour and bread. Celiac disease is a health problem caused by the inability of the gluten protein to be absorbed by the body, experts have determined that celiac disease is associated with high lipase levels.

Medicines

Various drugs may increase the lipase ratio in the blood. These drugs include furosemide, edema and pills used in the treatment of heart diseases, cortisone pills that treat inflammatory diseases, oral contraceptives prescribed for psychiatric diseases, and valproic acids.

Other causes of lipase elevation

“American Journal of Gastroenterology” reports that lipase elevation may occur due to pancreatitis in HIV patients. Lipase elevation may also occur in patients with renal disease or renal failure. Sometimes it is not possible to determine the cause of lipase elevation, which is called idiopathic lipase elevation.

  • Pancreatic cancer
  • cholecystitis
  • Gastroenteritis
  • Dementia of the duodenum
  • Intestinal Infarction
  • Lipase elevation may also occur due to intestinal obstruction.
